Charleston, WV – Residents near U.S. 119 and throughout southwestern West Virginia should prepare for heavy rain and potential flash flooding Thursday into the weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch, cautioning residents about localized flash flooding as persistent rain continues across the region.
According to NWS Charleston, heavy downpours are expected to intensify Friday, with a 75% chance of thunderstorms. These storms could bring an inch or more of rain by nightfall. Saturday will offer little relief, as another 50% chance of storms may add to the rain totals, particularly impacting areas near rivers, streams, and low-lying roadways.
Motorists traveling along U.S. 119, I-64, and I-77 should exercise caution, especially near flood-prone areas. High winds of up to 30 mph are also expected Friday, especially in mountainous regions. Conditions will gradually improve by Monday, with lighter showers in the forecast for early next week.
