Midland, TX – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent Tornado Watch for West Texas, including the Permian Basin, effective from 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Saturday. The region faces threats of tornadoes, large hail, and powerful wind gusts.
NWS forecasters report conditions may support the development of supercell thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, especially in areas south and near an outflow boundary. Large hail, reaching sizes up to 2.5 inches in diameter, and damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph are possible. The watch area spans 50 miles north and south of a line from southwest of Carlsbad, NM, to northeast of Midland, TX.
The storm threat is expected to heighten through the afternoon and early evening, as low-level winds strengthen. Forecasters note that the more intense storms may develop tornado potential late in the day, particularly in the Permian Basin.
West Texas residents should stay informed and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued. Monitoring local weather stations and alerts is essential for those in the tornado watch area.
