Midland, Texas – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday for much of West Texas and parts of southeastern New Mexico, as powerful storms threaten to bring 70 mph wind gusts, large hail, and dangerous lightning.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes 25 counties across Texas—from Gaines and Ector to Maverick and Presidio—as well as Eddy and Lea counties in New Mexico. The greatest threats include wind damage and isolated large hail, with scattered storms expected to develop rapidly late this afternoon and into the evening.
Cities under the watch include Midland, San Angelo, Del Rio, and Alpine. Drivers on U.S. Highways 90, 285, and I-10 should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Outdoor activities and high-profile vehicle travel should be postponed in affected areas. Power outages may also occur due to downed lines.
Residents are urged to secure loose items, charge devices, and stay tuned to local alerts. The storm system is expected to weaken after midnight, but more watches could be issued if cells redevelop overnight.
