Lubbock, Texas – Golf ball-sized hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph could strike Lubbock and nearby areas late Wednesday afternoon and evening, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a slight chance of severe storms will develop across the region beginning around 4 p.m. Wednesday, with the highest risks concentrated through the evening hours. Communities including Plainview, Morton, and Post are all within the elevated threat zone.

Strong winds may bring down tree limbs and power lines, while large hail could damage vehicles, roofs, and crops. Drivers on U.S. Highway 84 and Interstate 27 should prepare for sudden visibility reductions and potential debris on roadways. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, park vehicles in garages if possible, and monitor local weather alerts throughout the evening.

While tornado development is not expected, isolated severe storms could still cause brief, localized damage. Wednesday’s threat mirrors early spring patterns seen in past years across the South Plains, where sudden severe weather outbreaks are common.

Additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen. Residents should stay weather-aware, with updates expected into Wednesday night.
