Lubbock, Texas – Much of the South Plains will bake under sunny skies and southwest winds today, with highs climbing into the upper 80s and 90s across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, temperatures on Sunday will peak near 97°F in Aspermont, 95°F in Childress, and 91°F in Lubbock. Gusty southwest winds between 10 and 25 mph will add to already dry and warm conditions through the afternoon.
Friona is expected to be the coolest spot at 85°F, while Plainview, Brownfield, and other nearby towns will top out just shy of 90°F. Residents are urged to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, especially in southern areas where temperatures will approach triple digits.
Although no heat advisories are currently in effect, elevated fire danger remains a concern due to breezy and dry conditions. Drivers should also be cautious of crosswinds on rural roads, particularly along U.S. 84 and U.S. 62.
Temperatures are expected to remain high into the early part of the week. More updates are expected by Monday morning as the region heads into a prolonged stretch of above-average warmth.
