Stanton, TX – Two earthquakes shook West Texas in under 24 hours, with both events occurring near Midland. The first quake, with a magnitude of 2.6, struck 24 kilometers west-northwest of Stanton on Monday. Just hours later, a 2.8-magnitude tremor hit 30 kilometers west-southwest of Ackerly.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake happened around midnight, while the second tremor occurred mid-morning. Both events, though minor in magnitude, have raised questions from locals about the increasing seismic activity in the region. So far, no significant damage has been reported.

Residents are encouraged to report if they felt either tremor through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” program. The back-to-back quakes have sparked discussions on whether increased oil extraction and fracking in West Texas could be contributing to the frequency of earthquakes.
