Memphis, TN – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the Mid-South, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions to Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Snowfall totals are expected to range from 5 to 8 inches in parts of West Tennessee, with some areas seeing even higher amounts.
According to the National Weather Service, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight Friday for East Arkansas, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee. For North Mississippi, the warning is extended until 6 p.m. Friday. The storm includes a mix of snow, sleet, and light ice accumulations, creating slippery roads and dangerous travel conditions.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous. Those who must travel should pack an emergency kit with food, water, and a flashlight in case of delays.
Morning and evening commutes across the region are expected to face significant disruptions. Local emergency management teams recommend monitoring road conditions by calling 511 and staying updated through weather alerts.
In Memphis and surrounding areas, snow is already accumulating, with snowfall intensifying as the day progresses. Parts of North Mississippi, including Tupelo, Oxford, and Batesville, are also experiencing hazardous icy conditions. Snowfall in Mississippi is expected to peak at around two inches, with a light glaze of ice making roads even more treacherous.
Residents are encouraged to stay indoors and prepare for possible power outages. Officials stress that delaying travel and using extreme caution when necessary could prevent accidents and injuries during this winter storm.
