Memphis, TN – Flooding along the Mississippi River is causing safety concerns across West Tennessee as a National Weather Service alert extends through Friday, April 25. Officials warn of persistent high water levels that could impact travel and infrastructure near U.S. Highway 51 and critical fuel terminals in Memphis.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, floodwaters reached 38.4 feet Wednesday night, exceeding the flood stage of 34.0 feet. As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, the river was at 37.6 feet and slowly falling. The forecast predicts the river will remain above flood stage until Thursday, April 24, and recede to 8.2 feet by Wednesday, May 7.

The fuel terminal just south of the Memphis river gauge is already experiencing flooding. This may cause logistical issues through the weekend. Travelers and commercial drivers should monitor road conditions closely, especially near Caruthersville, Osceola, and Tiptonville.
