San Angelo, TX — West central Texas will experience extreme cold temperatures starting Tuesday evening, with wind chills dropping to near or below zero across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, the extreme cold watch will remain in effect from Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, through Thursday morning, Feb. 20. Temperatures will plummet into the single digits and teens, accompanied by gusty north winds, creating dangerous conditions.

Residents in cities including San Angelo, Abilene, Brownwood, and Sweetwater are urged to prepare for wind chills as low as -5°F. Prolonged exposure to the cold could lead to hypothermia or frostbite if adequate precautions are not taken. Freezing temperatures may also cause water pipes to rupture if not properly insulated.

Officials recommend wearing protective clothing, such as hats, face masks, and heavy gloves, when venturing outdoors. Homeowners should wrap or drain outdoor water pipes and cover exposed plumbing to prevent freezing.

This extreme cold event highlights the importance of preparation, as conditions are expected to be more severe than typical February weather in the region.
