San Angelo, TX – Strong winds and dry conditions are creating an elevated fire weather threat across West Central Texas today, increasing the risk of fast-spreading wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene and San Angelo, south winds will range from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts exceeding 30 mph. Low humidity levels between 20-30% will further contribute to fire danger, especially in areas with dormant grass and brush.
A Rangeland Fire Danger Statement is in effect, urging residents to take precautions. Officials advise against outdoor burning, driving on dry grass, and improperly discarding cigarette butts. Chains dragging from vehicles can also create sparks, increasing the fire risk.
Temperatures will reach the low to mid-70s today, with dry conditions persisting. Residents in San Angelo, Abilene, and surrounding areas should remain alert and follow fire safety recommendations.
