Seattle, Washington – Drivers crossing Snoqualmie and Stevens passes could face snow-covered highways and reduced visibility through the Thursday morning commute as up to 9 inches of snow piles up above 3,500 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. PST Thursday for the Cascades of Snohomish, King, Pierce and Lewis counties. Snowfall totals of 7 to 9 inches are expected between 3,500 and 4,500 feet, with locally higher amounts at higher elevations. The heaviest snowfall is forecast Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday across Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie Pass and White Pass.
Travel along Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass, U.S. 2 near Stevens Pass and State Route 410 near Crystal Mountain may become very difficult. Snowfall rates could quickly cover road surfaces, while traction tire or chain requirements are likely. Areas around Mount Rainier, Paradise, Longmire and Ashford will also see steady accumulation.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and carry chains and winter emergency supplies. Prepare for isolated power outages in heavier snow bands.
Snow tapers late Thursday morning, but slick conditions may persist at pass level. Additional updates are possible if snowfall intensifies overnight.
