Seattle, Washington – A dangerous mix of hot air and cold water is creating life-threatening conditions for King County residents through 10 p.m. Monday. Temperatures are surging into the upper 80s and low 90s, while lakes and rivers remain in the 40s and 50s—posing a serious risk of cold shock and drowning.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, the heat advisory covers all of western and northwest Washington, including Seattle, Everett, Olympia, and surrounding valleys. Highs Monday will peak near 90° in urban areas and reach the mid-90s in the Cascade foothills, while lows Monday night will fall into the mid-50s.

Those without access to air conditioning, the elderly, and outdoor workers are most at risk. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in cool, shaded areas. Children and pets should never be left in cars, even for a moment.

Along I-5 and major roadways, drivers should watch for heat-related vehicle issues. If heading toward lakes like Lake Washington or the Snohomish River, be aware that cold water drains body heat up to 25 times faster than cold air. Wear a life jacket, monitor children closely, and avoid alcohol.

Warnings remain in effect until 10 PM Monday, but dry, sunny weather is expected to continue into midweek.
