Washington State – The first significant mountain snowfall of the season is forecast for Washington’s Cascade Mountains, starting Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday. Areas including Stevens Pass (U.S. Route 2) and Washington Pass (State Route 20) could see hazardous driving conditions as early as Wednesday evening, with snow accumulation expected above 4,000 feet. Drivers are urged to take precautions when traveling these mountain passes, especially at night, when conditions are most dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Stevens Pass is forecast to receive a 50% chance of 6 or more inches of snow, while Washington Pass has a 25% chance of seeing similar accumulation. The NWS advises drivers to monitor conditions closely, as changes in weather patterns could increase uncertainty on the roadways. Chains and winter tires are recommended, and non-essential travel should be avoided if snowfall exceeds expectations.

Temperatures will begin dropping Tuesday night, with lows dipping into the mid-30s across the region. On Wednesday, rain showers will develop in lower elevations, but snow is likely above 3,500 feet, potentially impacting mountain commuters. Thursday will bring the heaviest snowfall, particularly during the early morning hours, as freezing fog sets in.

Looking ahead, the weather will calm slightly by Friday, with freezing fog in the morning and partly sunny skies in the afternoon. However, cold temperatures will persist, with nighttime lows dipping into the low 30s, keeping the possibility of icy conditions in the mountains through the week.

Be sure to plan accordingly if you must travel, and stay updated with real-time alerts from the National Weather Service or local authorities.
