Yakima, WA – Residents across Central Washington and Northern Oregon should brace for sweltering heat starting Sunday, with temperatures soaring to 100°F and potentially reaching 105°F through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, followed by an Extreme Heat Watch from Sunday evening through Tuesday evening. The affected areas include Yakima, Hermiston, The Dalles, Ellensburg, and surrounding parts of the Columbia River Gorge and Kittitas Valley.

This multi-day heat event could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations. Emergency officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and avoid peak afternoon sun. Those working outside should take frequent breaks in the shade and wear light, breathable clothing.

Highways and city infrastructure could also be impacted, especially in sun-exposed areas like I-82 near Sunnyside or US-97 through Toppenish, where asphalt may soften and vehicle cooling systems can be stressed.

This heat wave is expected to be the region’s first major extreme temperature event of the summer.

More warnings or advisories may follow as conditions develop.
