Oak Harbor, WA – A minor earthquake shook parts of northwest Washington Tuesday night, registering a magnitude of 2.5 near Oak Harbor.

According to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN), the quake occurred at approximately 10:48 p.m. PT, about 4 kilometers east-northeast of Oak Bay, Canada. The earthquake struck at a depth of 46 kilometers, placing it beneath the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Vancouver Island and Washington state’s northern coast.

The tremor was lightly felt across Whidbey Island, particularly in Oak Harbor and surrounding areas. Two individuals submitted responses through the United States Geological Survey’s “Did You Feel It?” portal, reporting light shaking but no damage or injuries.

Seismologists note that while the magnitude was low, the region’s tectonic activity makes even minor quakes worth noting. The Cascadia Subduction Zone, which lies off the coast, is historically responsible for larger seismic events and ongoing ground movement.

Residents are advised to review emergency preparedness plans, including stocking essential supplies and securing heavy furniture. While no aftershocks have been reported, experts recommend remaining alert to seismic updates through the USGS and PNSN.

Earthquake activity in the region is continuously monitored to track patterns that may precede stronger events.
