Washington, D.C. –Boaters on the Tidal Potomac River faced a sudden blast of gale-force winds Saturday evening, prompting urgent warnings for those from Key Bridge to Cobb Island and neighboring Maryland waters. Hazardous conditions are expected to continue until 6 a.m. Sunday as a Gale Warning remains in effect.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, wind gusts quickly intensified just after 7 p.m., with speeds exceeding 34 knots reported in several locations along the river. The strongest impacts are expected along stretches near Indian Head, Cobb Island, and downriver toward the southern D.C. metro area. Authorities caution that these conditions may capsize smaller vessels, disrupt ferry service, and create rough waves along exposed shorelines.

Local marinas and emergency services urge boaters to seek safe harbor immediately and remain docked until the Gale Warning expires. Mariners should secure loose gear, use extra lines, and monitor marine VHF channels for updated advisories. This wind event is reminiscent of late spring gales in previous years, which have caused similar hazards on the Potomac.

Gale conditions are expected to persist overnight. Additional marine warnings or updates are possible as the situation evolves. Stay tuned for the latest from the National Weather Service.
