Blacksburg, VA – Winter weather will continue to grip southwest Virginia this weekend, with snow, freezing rain, and ice forecast starting Sunday. Residents and travelers along I-81 and other major routes should prepare for hazardous conditions as a winter storm watch goes into effect.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, snow is expected to develop by Sunday afternoon, followed by freezing rain overnight into Monday morning. Ice accumulations of up to 0.4 inches and snow totals of 1–3 inches are possible. The storm is forecast to create dangerous travel conditions and could result in power outages due to ice-coated power lines and tree limbs.

The bitter cold temperatures, already in the teens overnight, will persist. Wind chills may dip into single digits, making outdoor exposure risky. A wind advisory remains in effect until early Saturday morning, with gusts of up to 33 mph.

Looking ahead, Monday’s forecast includes rain transitioning to snow during the day, with high temperatures hovering near 37 degrees. Conditions will improve Tuesday, bringing partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 20s. The rest of the week will remain cold, with lows dipping into the teens and daytime highs peaking in the 20s.

Residents are advised to limit travel Sunday evening into Monday and stock up on emergency supplies, including flashlights and extra batteries. Be sure to monitor the latest forecasts for updates, especially if commuting early Monday.

Stay safe and follow local advisories to prepare for this weekend’s winter weather.
