Blacksburg, VA – Cold weather is set to grip southwest Virginia this weekend, with snow showers and dangerous wind chills impacting the region. Residents near I-77, especially around the Grayson Highlands and Bluefield, are urged to prepare for winter travel hazards starting tonight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, light snow flurries will develop late Saturday evening, with accumulations of up to one inch possible near Bluefield. Higher elevations, including the western mountains of Greenbrier County, WV, may see up to five inches of snow by Sunday night. Winds gusting up to 25 mph will drive wind chills down to the single digits, making outdoor activities hazardous.
Travelers along major routes, including I-77 and U.S. 460, should exercise caution as snow accumulation and black ice could create slippery conditions. Those venturing outdoors are encouraged to wear layers and limit exposure to prevent frostbite.
Looking ahead, Sunday will bring partly sunny skies with highs near 40 degrees, though gusty winds will persist, making it feel much colder. Sunday night temperatures will drop to around 20 degrees.
The extended forecast shows a calmer weather pattern starting Monday, with highs in the mid-30s and gradually warming to the low 40s by Wednesday. Sunny skies dominate much of the week, though nighttime lows will remain chilly, ranging from the upper teens to mid-20s.
Residents should monitor weather updates and prepare for possible delays or hazardous travel through the weekend. Keep emergency supplies on hand, especially if traveling through higher elevations.
