Blacksburg, VA – A winter weather advisory has been issued for portions of Virginia and West Virginia, with snow expected to accumulate between 2 and 4 inches. The advisory begins Friday at 1 p.m. EST and will remain in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, affected areas include central, southwest, and west-central Virginia, along with southeast West Virginia. Cities such as Roanoke, Blacksburg, Lexington, and Lewisburg are likely to experience snow-covered roads and hazardous travel conditions. The snowfall is expected to intensify during the Friday evening commute, making roads, bridges, and overpasses particularly slippery.

Officials urge residents to exercise caution while traveling and prepare for reduced visibility and slick surfaces. Drivers are advised to reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance. For the latest updates on road conditions, travelers can call 511 or check state transportation websites.

In addition to travel disruptions, icy sidewalks, driveways, and stairs could pose risks for pedestrians. Residents are encouraged to clear walkways and use ice-melting materials to improve safety. If venturing outdoors, take extra care to prevent slips and falls.

The advisory affects areas such as Bland, Wythe, Pulaski, Montgomery, Craig, and Botetourt counties in Virginia, as well as Monroe and Greenbrier counties in West Virginia. This event marks the season’s first significant snowfall in the region, and road crews are preparing to treat major highways and secondary roads.

The winter storm is forecast to clear by early Saturday, but cold temperatures may cause lingering icy patches. Residents should monitor local weather forecasts for updates and avoid unnecessary travel.
