Blacksburg, VA – A winter weather system will bring accumulating snow to central and southwest Virginia starting this afternoon. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions as 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected to fall by early Saturday morning. Gusty northwest winds and plunging temperatures will make roadways especially slick, with bridges and overpasses at the highest risk.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall is anticipated along the Virginia/North Carolina border and across the Virginia Piedmont. The winter weather advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday. The advisory warns of potentially hazardous conditions for evening commuters and suggests motorists reduce speeds and allow extra time for travel.

The snow is expected to taper off Saturday morning, but frigid Arctic air will settle into the area, bringing bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Highs on Saturday will only reach 30 degrees, with lows plummeting to 12 degrees overnight. Sunday’s forecast offers some relief with mostly sunny skies and a high near 36 degrees, though temperatures will remain well below freezing at night.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday will remain cold, with highs in the low 20s and nighttime lows dropping into the teens. Residents should take precautions by dressing in layers and protecting exposed skin from frostbite. Keep an emergency kit in vehicles and monitor weather updates for changing conditions.

Be sure to follow local authorities and weather reports for updates and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snow hours.
