Virginia—Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Southern Counties: Snow Accumulation to Impact Travel
Mercer and Summers counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory as snow continues to fall through Friday morning, potentially disrupting road conditions. Greenbrier County is under a more severe Winter Storm Warning, with totals of up to 8 inches expected in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service, snow began early Thursday in the mountains, with heavier bursts expected during the evening commute. The advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Friday, urging drivers to prepare for hazardous conditions, particularly along the I-77 corridor. Slippery roads and reduced visibility are likely, making travel risky.
Snowfall in Mercer and Summers counties is forecast at 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Drivers are encouraged to monitor road conditions via 511 and allow extra time for their journeys. In Greenbrier County, heavier snow accumulation could significantly worsen travel conditions.
Looking ahead, the region can expect a bitterly cold weekend. Highs on Friday will reach the low 40s, but temperatures will plummet into the 20s Friday night. A mix of rain and snow is possible Saturday morning, with light accumulation likely. Sunday’s forecast includes a chance of snow showers, followed by a drop to single-digit lows Sunday night.
By Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the cold will deepen, with highs only reaching the teens. Residents should bundle up and prepare for icy conditions.
For safety, residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and check weather updates frequently at weather.gov/rnk.
