Blacksburg, VA – Residents of southwest Virginia are urged to prepare for icy conditions on Sunday as a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 7 p.m. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow are expected along and west of the Blue Ridge, including the I-77 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, precipitation will begin early Sunday morning, with freezing rain likely in the lower elevations and up to 0.2 inches of ice in higher terrain. Snow and sleet accumulations are forecast to stay under one inch. Drivers should plan for slippery roads, particularly in Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties. Temperatures are expected to rise throughout the day, with rain gradually replacing ice by Sunday evening.
Light rain will reach the eastern Piedmont region by midday, further easing icy conditions. However, travel may remain hazardous until temperatures climb above freezing. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during the early morning hours and allow extra time for commutes.
Looking ahead, the week starts with lingering rain Monday morning, followed by clearing skies and highs near 54°F. Tuesday brings sunshine and a high near 58°F, with a chance of showers returning by Wednesday. Thursday will see a return to cooler temperatures, with highs in the low 40s.
