Richmond, VA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring snow, sleet, and icy conditions across central and eastern Virginia starting late Sunday. Forecasters warn that hazardous road conditions are likely, with major impacts expected for Monday’s morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning will take effect at 4 p.m. Sunday and remain in place through 7 a.m. Tuesday. The storm is expected to bring snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 6 inches, depending on the location, with ice adding to the danger. Some areas could see up to two-tenths of an inch of ice.

Travelers should prepare for delays and slippery conditions, especially on highways like I-64 and Route 60. The NWS advises keeping an emergency kit with essentials, including food, water, and flashlights, in vehicles.

On Monday, snow is expected to turn into sleet by late morning, creating additional hazards. Temperatures will remain below freezing, making untreated roads especially treacherous. Conditions are not expected to improve until Tuesday afternoon, with sunny weather forecast.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to monitor local updates for weather and road conditions. For real-time updates, travelers can call 511 or visit the Virginia Department of Transportation’s website.
