Blacksburg, VA — A powerful winter storm is set to sweep across southwest Virginia beginning Sunday afternoon, bringing snow, freezing rain, and dangerous ice accumulations. Residents in Blacksburg and surrounding areas should prepare for hazardous travel and possible power outages.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow will begin midday Sunday, transitioning into a wintry mix by the afternoon. Freezing rain is expected Sunday evening, with ice accumulations between 0.1 and 0.3 inches in Blacksburg and areas along Route 460. This could make roads slick and treacherous, particularly during overnight hours into Monday morning. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on road conditions.

Temperatures will hover around 34°F on Sunday before dropping to 28°F Sunday night, allowing ice to form rapidly. Monday will bring rain and additional freezing conditions before precipitation clears by the evening. Gusty winds of up to 22 mph could exacerbate power line issues. Local utility companies recommend keeping emergency supplies on hand in case of outages.

Looking ahead, the region will see a break in the wintry weather Tuesday, with sunny skies and a high near 28°F. However, frigid overnight lows of 15°F mean refreezing is likely.

Stay tuned to the National Weather Service and local authorities for updates on the storm’s progression. Plan ahead, stay indoors if possible, and ensure your vehicles and homes are winter-ready.
