Blacksburg, VA – Freezing rain and a wintry mix are set to impact the Blacksburg area today through Monday night, creating dangerous travel conditions and potential power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning, urging residents to prepare for ice accumulations up to 0.3 inches in some areas.

According to the NWS, precipitation will begin this afternoon as snow before transitioning to freezing rain by tonight. Roads, especially major routes like Route 460, are expected to become slick, with icy surfaces posing significant hazards. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions to stay safe, as freezing rain could persist into Monday.

Monday will see continued freezing rain mixed with snow showers, with temperatures reaching a high of 39 degrees. Winds are expected to intensify, reaching speeds of up to 28 mph Monday night. Ice accumulation could lead to power outages, with utility companies warning of extended disruptions in some areas.

The rest of the week will bring relief from freezing conditions. Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high of 27, followed by clear skies through Thursday. However, nighttime lows will remain frigid, dipping to 12 degrees on Tuesday night and only climbing to 13 degrees by Thursday morning.

Drivers are encouraged to monitor updates from the Virginia Department of Transportation for road closures and safety tips. Keep flashlights, batteries, and blankets on hand in case of power outages.

Stay updated on weather alerts and be cautious if traveling in icy conditions.
