Richmond, Virginia – NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts across eastern Virginia are offline through Thursday due to a major software update at the National Weather Service office in Wakefield.

According to the NWS Wakefield office, the outage affects all surrounding transmitters, including those serving Accomac (162.525 MHz), Heathsville (162.400), Norfolk (162.550), and Richmond (162.475). The update is expected to be completed by Thursday afternoon, though delays are possible if issues arise with the new system.

The outage means NOAA weather radios will not receive warnings or alerts via audio until service is restored. Impacted areas span nine key transmitter locations, including Windsor, Salisbury, and New Kent. While automated alerts on phones, TV, and online services will continue, officials urge residents to have alternate ways to receive emergency weather information during this time.

Residents should check local news sources, smartphone weather apps, and the NWS Wakefield social media accounts for real-time updates. This outage does not affect the issuance of weather warnings — only their broadcast over NOAA radio.

Service may resume Thursday, but updates will be posted if the timeline changes.
