Blacksburg, Virginia – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to roll into the New River Valley by Monday evening, bringing slick roads and patchy fog along U.S. 460. Drivers and residents in Blacksburg should prepare for limited visibility and brief heavy downpours as Tropical Storm Chantal fuels unstable summer air across southwest Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, storm chances rise sharply after 2 p.m. Monday, with stronger cells possible through midnight. While rainfall totals should remain under a tenth of an inch, isolated pockets could produce higher amounts. Wind gusts and lightning remain the primary threats.

Monday night’s storm chances (40%) will give way to warmer and sunnier conditions by Tuesday, with highs nearing 89°F and increasing humidity. Another round of storms is possible Tuesday afternoon into the evening.

Looking ahead, Wednesday carries the highest rain potential of the week with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Conditions trend drier starting Thursday afternoon. No widespread hazardous weather is forecast beyond Monday, but scattered showers may linger into early Saturday.

More updates are expected if Tropical Storm Chantal strengthens or shifts.
