Blacksburg, VA – Southwest Virginia residents should prepare for a shift in the weather Thursday, as spotty morning showers are expected. After a day of partly sunny skies and unseasonably high temperatures reaching 76 degrees, a cold front will bring cooler temperatures and rain. Those traveling along U.S. Route 460 should plan for possible slick road conditions in the early hours.
According to the National Weather Service, isolated showers will develop after midnight, with a higher chance between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. The day will begin mostly cloudy before gradually clearing. Afternoon highs will remain mild, peaking near 76 degrees, but temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight to around 53 degrees. Winds will be light throughout the day, limiting the spread of colder air until the front fully passes.
Friday will bring a reprieve with partly sunny skies and highs around 70 degrees. However, cooler weather will settle in over the weekend, with highs only reaching the mid-60s by Saturday. Nighttime temperatures could dip into the 40s, adding a chill to the fall air. By Sunday, another front interacting with tropical moisture from Hurricane Rafael could bring more widespread showers to the region, keeping conditions damp through Veterans Day on Monday.
