Richmond, VA – Rain and snow are forecast to sweep through Virginia on Sunday, with plunging temperatures creating dangerous conditions along the I-95 corridor and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, rain showers will begin early Sunday morning before transitioning to snow by the afternoon in central and northern regions. Richmond and areas further north could see snow accumulations of 1–3 inches by Sunday night. Highs will peak near 35°F, but strong winds with gusts up to 22 mph will create wind chills in the teens.
By Sunday evening, temperatures will drop sharply into the low 20s, and sub-freezing conditions will extend through midweek. Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on bridges and overpasses. Drivers should prepare for potentially hazardous travel along major highways, including I-95, and reduce speed to avoid accidents.
Officials urge residents to take precautions ahead of the cold snap. Insulate exposed pipes, check heating systems, and stock emergency supplies. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, should be monitored closely, and outdoor activities should be limited during the coldest periods. Pets and plants should also be protected.
The wintry weather will be accompanied by dry, arctic air on Monday, with highs only reaching 22°F and overnight lows plummeting into the single digits. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until Wednesday, with another chance of snow possible by midweek.
