Blacksburg, VA – Rain transitioning to snow Friday evening could create slick roads and travel delays across Southwest Virginia, including along I-81. Forecasts indicate that snow will primarily affect the mountainous areas, with accumulating snowfall expected late Friday into Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, light rain will develop Friday afternoon, with a 30% chance of precipitation increasing by nightfall. By Friday evening, colder temperatures will cause rain to turn into snow, with the highest impact in higher elevations. Minor snow accumulation may occur, but exact amounts remain uncertain.

Hazardous travel conditions are likely along mountain roads, including portions of I-81 and local highways. Travelers are encouraged to monitor road conditions and drive cautiously. Temperatures Friday night will dip to 27°F with gusty northwest winds reaching up to 25 mph.

Saturday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high of 34°F, with conditions clearing by Saturday night as temperatures plummet to 17°F. Sunday will remain clear but cold, with a high of 34°F and lows around 16°F.

Looking into next week, Blacksburg can expect sunny skies Monday and Tuesday, with highs near 37°F. Rain may return by Christmas Day. Residents should prepare for freezing conditions and possible snow accumulation this weekend.
