Roanoke, Va. – High heat and weekend storms are set to impact much of southwest Virginia, with temperatures peaking in the 90s and rain chances climbing to 70% by Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, heat index values will soar across the region starting Thursday, with Danville expected to reach a sweltering 93°F on Saturday. Roanoke, South Boston, and Martinsville could also see heat indices above 90°F Friday into the weekend. The oppressive heat will give way to increasing storm chances, with rain probabilities rising sharply from 15% on Thursday to 60–70% across many cities by Saturday.

Cities like Boone, Bluefield, and Wytheville could see storms as early as Friday, with weekend totals possibly exceeding 0.5 inches. The pattern shift will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially Saturday and Sunday, along the I-81 corridor and into the Piedmont.

Residents should limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and secure power backups for possible storm-related outages. Those traveling on U.S. 29, I-77, or Route 58 should monitor for reduced visibility or ponding on roads late Friday and Saturday.

Storm chances remain elevated through Sunday, and additional watches may be issued later this week.
