Roanoke, VA — A tornado watch remains in effect for southern and central Virginia until 8 PM on Friday. Communities in these areas are advised to remain alert as the threat for severe weather, including tornadoes, persists into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (SPC), clusters of rotating thunderstorms are moving northward from extreme northern North Carolina into southern Virginia. These storms have the potential to produce tornadoes and damaging winds. The SPC warns that low-level moisture and rotation could result in severe weather along the I-81 corridor, with areas like Roanoke and the Tidewater region particularly at risk.

Residents are urged to stay informed by checking weather updates frequently. If a tornado warning is issued, take immediate shelter in an interior room away from windows. Traveling during these storms is not recommended due to high winds and the potential for debris on roadways.

Looking ahead, thunderstorms are expected to taper off overnight, but wet and unsettled weather may continue into the weekend. Stay tuned for more updates as the weekend progresses.
