Richmond, Virginia – Strong to severe thunderstorms could roll into central and eastern Virginia this weekend, with damaging winds posing the main hazard by Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a slight risk for severe weather begins Friday across the Piedmont with isolated late-day storms. By Saturday and Sunday, scattered to numerous storms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening hours. Wind gusts could reach 45 to 60 mph across much of central and southeastern Virginia, especially from Richmond to Virginia Beach.
The threat grows as a low-pressure system drifts east, dragging unstable air and moisture into the region. Saturday looks warmer and more humid, with highs in the mid-80s to near 90°F. Outdoor events may be disrupted as storm coverage increases across cities like Petersburg, Williamsburg, and Newport News.
Coastal areas will also need to watch for rip current risks, especially at Virginia Beach and along the Eastern Shore.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid outdoor activities during storms, and charge devices in case of power outages.
Storm chances will linger through Sunday evening. More updates are expected as models refine timing and intensity.
