Blacksburg, VA – Thanksgiving travelers in Virginia should prepare for rain and a sharp drop in temperatures, with a winter-like chill arriving just in time for Black Friday. Rain showers are expected late tonight into Thursday, impacting early-morning travel along major routes like I-81 and Route 460.
According to the National Weather Service, rain is likely to begin after midnight and continue through much of Thanksgiving morning. Highs Thursday will reach near 49°F, but drivers should be cautious as roadways could become slick from rainfall. Precipitation amounts could range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch.
A powerful cold front will sweep through the region Thursday night, bringing dry but significantly colder conditions by Friday. High temperatures on Black Friday are expected to top out at just 41°F, with wind gusts up to 23 mph making it feel even colder. Overnight lows Friday and Saturday will dip into the low 20s, and areas of frost are likely.
Looking ahead to the weekend, sunny skies are forecast Saturday, but highs will remain below freezing at around 36°F. Sunday will be similarly chilly, with temperatures struggling to rise above 36°F under partly sunny skies.
Those planning holiday shopping or outdoor activities should dress warmly and monitor weather updates for any potential travel disruptions.
