Blacksburg, VA – Freezing temperatures and bitter wind chills are set to grip the region this weekend as Canadian air pushes into Virginia. Residents should prepare for single-digit wind chills and lows near 20 degrees starting Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, temperatures will begin dropping Friday, with highs struggling to reach 36 degrees. Wind chills in the mountains are expected to dip into the single digits overnight, with foothills and Piedmont areas feeling like the low teens. Shoppers heading out on Black Friday should dress in layers and be prepared for biting winds.

Saturday will remain cold, with a high near 36 degrees and a low of 25 overnight. Skies will stay mostly sunny, but wind gusts up to 20 mph could make it feel even colder. Sunday is forecast to be slightly warmer, with highs around 37 degrees and partly sunny skies, but nighttime lows will plummet to 18 degrees.

By Monday, the coldest day of the week, daytime highs will reach only 34 degrees, and lows will stay around 20. The chill will begin easing Wednesday as highs approach the low 40s.

Motorists traveling along Route 460 and I-81 this weekend should take extra precautions as frost could form on roadways overnight. Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors, and anyone spending extended time outside should dress warmly and cover exposed skin.

The cold snap serves as a reminder to check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure homes are winter-ready. Keep space heaters away from flammable materials and ensure outdoor faucets are insulated.
