Richmond, Virginia – Strong to severe thunderstorms could rattle parts of Virginia late this afternoon, with isolated wind damage and hail likely between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday as a cold front moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, areas including Richmond, Norfolk, and Williamsburg fall under a marginal risk for severe storms. Wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters are the main threats. While tornadoes and flooding are not expected, brief downpours and lightning may accompany storms.

The highest risk zone includes central and southeastern Virginia—places like South Hill, Petersburg, Emporia, and Virginia Beach—where cooling temperatures in the mid-70s will clash with unstable afternoon air. Localized power outages and tree damage are possible if stronger cells develop.

Drivers should avoid travel during peak storm hours, especially on I-64 and I-95, and secure outdoor items vulnerable to wind. Residents are urged to monitor alerts via weather radios or mobile apps in case warnings are issued.

Storms are expected to taper off late tonight, but more showers could return Monday. Stay weather-aware as forecasts update.
