Blacksburg, VA – Southwest Virginia is bracing for a significant weather shift as a strong cold front arrives Thursday afternoon. Residents along I-77 and in higher elevations should prepare for heavy snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, snow is expected to accumulate over several days, with some areas possibly receiving more than four inches. Temperatures will drop sharply, falling into the 20s at night, creating slick road conditions and reducing visibility. Travelers are urged to plan ahead, drive cautiously, and monitor local weather updates.

The snow will begin as light showers on Thursday night before intensifying Friday, especially in mountainous regions near Bluefield and Wytheville. Winds could gust up to 34 mph, adding to the potential for dangerous travel conditions. Areas along I-77 and parts of I-81 are expected to see the most significant impacts.

Looking ahead, Saturday will bring a slight reprieve with partly sunny skies, though temperatures will remain in the mid-40s. Sunday is expected to warm slightly, with a high near 55 and mostly clear conditions.

The extended forecast shows continued cold temperatures, keeping snow and ice risks elevated on less-traveled roads and shaded areas. Residents are encouraged to stock up on essentials, avoid unnecessary travel during peak snow periods, and clear walkways to prevent ice buildup.
