Richmond, Virginia – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across much of Virginia Tuesday evening, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph likely between 4 and 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a cold front moving through the region will trigger scattered thunderstorms beginning late afternoon and continuing into the early overnight hours. Areas from Richmond to Norfolk are under a Level 2 “Slight” risk for severe weather, meaning isolated strong storms could cause damage. Flash flooding is also possible, especially in low-lying and urban areas.
Cities including Petersburg, Williamsburg, and Farmville may see downed trees, power outages, or hazardous road conditions as storms roll through. The main concern remains strong wind gusts, but localized flooding on streets and highways could cause evening traffic disruptions. Storm motion is expected to be west to east at 5–10 mph.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor weather alerts, and avoid travel during periods of heavy rain. If driving, watch for ponding water and debris on roads.
Storm chances will diminish after midnight, but more updates may follow if storm strength intensifies.
