Blacksburg, VA – A wet weekend is ahead for Virginia as multiple rounds of heavy rain are set to begin Friday night and continue through Sunday. Residents in the Blue Ridge region, especially along low-lying roads and creeks, should prepare for potential flooding as rainfall totals could exceed 3 inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rain will intensify Saturday morning and peak Sunday afternoon, with areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway at the highest risk. Officials warn that localized flooding could impact small streams and urban areas, including major travel routes like Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution during peak rainfall hours and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Travelers returning from holiday destinations should allow extra time and check weather conditions before heading out.
Saturday’s high will reach 52 degrees with rain expected throughout the day. Overnight temperatures will drop to 50 degrees, maintaining steady rainfall into Sunday. Sunday’s forecast calls for additional rainfall, with winds up to 20 mph and a high of 61 degrees. Rain chances will taper off by Sunday evening, giving way to partly cloudy skies and a high of 54 degrees on Monday.
The NWS urges residents to monitor updates and prepare emergency kits in case of flash flooding.
