Richmond, VA – Rain chances will rise across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina starting Sunday night, with some areas seeing up to half an inch through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, dry and cooler-than-normal conditions will hold through most of Sunday, but a system moving in from the west will bring increasing rainfall Sunday night into Monday, especially across southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Richmond, Norfolk, Emporia, and Elizabeth City are all projected to receive between 0.25 to 0.5 inches of total rain by Tuesday night.

While the rain will help ease dry conditions, it may impact early-week travel and outdoor plans. Areas such as Farmville, Petersburg, and Williamsburg are also likely to experience wet conditions late Sunday into early Monday before a brief period of clearing. Rain will then return Tuesday afternoon into evening as another system approaches from the west.

Beachgoers should be cautious: while Sunday’s rip current risk is low, the threat becomes moderate Monday at Virginia Beach and the northern Outer Banks. Officials urge swimmers to heed local advisories and avoid rough surf.

The heaviest rainfall is expected by late Tuesday. Stay updated, as additional advisories may be issued through midweek.
