Virginia – The first light of dawn reveals a frosty glaze across cars, bridges, and rooftops this morning as southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina wake under a Winter Weather Advisory. Temperatures sit around the freezing mark, and patches of snow and ice continue to cause slick travel conditions in spots across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield reports up to one inch of additional snow accumulation possible through early morning, with freezing moisture on untreated surfaces creating slippery conditions. Drivers should slow down, especially along I-64, Route 58, and local bridges where black ice can form easily as residual moisture freezes.

Conditions improve quickly through the afternoon as temperatures rise into the low 40s and skies begin to clear. Sunshine returns by midweek, ushering in a mild and breezy stretch with highs near 60°F by Wednesday and mid-40s by Thursday.

Still, this early-season storm marks Virginia’s first winter tease of December, a reminder that the season’s freeze-thaw cycles are now underway. Officials urge residents to check on neighbors, especially those without reliable heat, as temperatures dip back near freezing Tuesday night before the next warm-up.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 9–13)

  • Thursday: High 46°F, bright and cool.
  • Friday: High 45°F, partly sunny.
