Blacksburg, Va. – Rain chances are ramping up across southwest Virginia and bordering areas through Sunday, with severe thunderstorms possible Saturday, especially in northern North Carolina counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, light showers Thursday evening will taper off overnight, but a new wave of rainfall is expected to move in Friday afternoon, intensifying into Saturday. By 6 p.m. Saturday, cities like Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Radford show a 75% or higher probability of rain. Sunday remains soggy, with another round of showers pushing through the region.
Cities such as Bluefield, Mt. Airy, and West Jefferson could experience rainfall exceeding 80% probability at points on Saturday, accompanied by gusty winds and potential lightning. Travel may be disrupted, especially along U.S. Route 460 and I-81, where saturated roads could lead to hydroplaning or delays. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary driving during peak storm windows and to secure outdoor items in advance.
NWS notes the highest thunderstorm threat will develop Saturday afternoon into the evening, mainly targeting counties near the Virginia–North Carolina border. Rain chances linger into Sunday with scattered downpours likely.
More updates are expected Friday morning as storm models evolve.
