Drivers across central and eastern Virginia face challenging travel conditions this morning as dense fog blankets the region, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Dense Fog Advisory effective until 9 a.m., cautioning drivers to slow down and use low beam headlights, particularly on the James River Bridge and nearby areas.

According to the NWS, the dense fog is impacting the James River, York River, and Rappahannock River regions, including routes from Urbanna to Windmill Point and the James River Bridge to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Navigating these areas will be hazardous, with limited visibility affecting both vehicle and marine traffic. Drivers should be alert and maintain a safe following distance, especially near school zones where visibility is further compromised by flashing lights.

Fog Lifting Expected Mid-Morning

The dense fog is forecasted to gradually lift by mid-morning, improving conditions as the sun rises. However, patchy fog could persist in low-lying areas and along rivers through late morning. For those on the road or waterways, the use of radar, compass, and fog signals is strongly advised for safe navigation.
