Blacksburg, VA – Hazardous winter weather continues to impact Virginia today, as freezing rain and icy roads create treacherous travel conditions. US 460 and surrounding areas are particularly dangerous, with ice accumulation expected to worsen overnight. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for power outages due to ice-laden power lines.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Freezing rain will persist through the morning, with precipitation transitioning to rain and snow later in the day. Roads will refreeze overnight as temperatures plummet into the teens, increasing the risk of black ice by Tuesday morning. Drivers should reduce speeds and allow extra space between vehicles.
Bitterly cold temperatures will dominate the week, with highs near 27°F on Tuesday and dropping to 13°F overnight. Sunshine will return midweek, but lows will dip to 12°F on Wednesday and 10°F by Thursday morning, keeping roads icy for days.
Residents should take precautions, including keeping an emergency kit in their vehicles and monitoring updates at weather.gov/rnk. Power outages are possible, and residents should report fallen power lines to local authorities.
This week’s frigid temperatures follow the storm, with mostly sunny conditions starting Wednesday. Another winter storm could approach the region by Friday, bringing renewed travel concerns. Stay prepared by checking forecasts regularly.
