Staunton, VA – A freeze warning has been issued across portions of western Virginia, with temperatures expected to dip as low as 26°F in some areas overnight into Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, the warning will remain in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. EDT Thursday. Impacted counties include Augusta, Shenandoah, Rockingham, and Page, all of which may see sub-freezing conditions capable of damaging unprotected outdoor plumbing and killing sensitive plants.
The cold snap could be particularly dangerous for gardeners and farmers. Residents are urged to take immediate action to protect vulnerable crops and outdoor vegetation. Covering plants or bringing them indoors can reduce exposure to the freezing temperatures. Additionally, homeowners should insulate exposed pipes or allow faucets to drip slightly overnight to prevent freezing.
Although April typically signals warmer weather across the Shenandoah Valley, sudden overnight freezes are not uncommon in higher elevations this time of year. This warning highlights the importance of monitoring late-season temperature swings.
Drivers should also remain alert in early morning hours, as lingering moisture may lead to slick patches in low-lying or shaded areas.
