Wakefield, VA – Flood warnings remain in effect for parts of Virginia as the Appomattox and Nottoway rivers continue to rise, impacting several counties. Minor flooding is expected to persist through Sunday, with affected areas including Amelia, Powhatan, Chesterfield, Southampton, and Sussex counties.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, the Appomattox River at Mattoax remains above its flood stage of 21.0 feet, reaching 23.0 feet as of Thursday night. The river is expected to fall below flood stage by late Friday morning. Flooding of agricultural lands and secondary roads has been reported.
Meanwhile, the Nottoway River at Sebrell reached 17.7 feet Thursday night, surpassing its 16.0-foot flood stage. The river is expected to crest just after midnight before gradually receding below flood stage by late Saturday evening. Businesses, including the Hancock Peanut Mill in Courtland, may experience minor flooding.
