Blacksburg, VA — A sudden drop in temperatures will hit Virginia this week as a cold front brings the first freeze of the fall season. Residents in the Blacksburg area should expect the temperature to dip into the 30s Monday night, with a colder freeze expected by Wednesday morning. Those traveling along Route 460 should take extra precautions for frost conditions starting Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service, Monday will be cooler with a high of 59°F, followed by even chillier conditions as the week progresses. Tuesday brings a slight chance of showers, but patchy frost is expected overnight. Wednesday morning will see the coldest temperatures, with lows dipping near 31°F, and widespread frost is anticipated throughout the region. The cold will persist into Thursday, when lows will hover around freezing before a gradual warming trend takes hold over the weekend.

High winds from the northwest will add to the chill, with gusts up to 22 mph on Tuesday night. Officials advise residents to cover or bring in sensitive plants, especially as frost may last through Thursday morning. If you’re planning to commute, drive with caution on frost-covered roads.

Looking ahead, Thursday’s high will reach only 58°F under clear skies, while Friday will begin a warming trend with highs reaching the mid-60s. Weekend conditions will improve, with highs around 70°F by Saturday. However, residents should remain alert for frost through midweek.

Now is the time to winterize your home and garden as the cold air settles in.
