Burlington, VT – Travelers in Vermont should prepare for challenging weather this Thanksgiving week as two winter systems move through the region.
A light freezing rain event is expected early Tuesday morning, followed by a potentially stronger storm Thursday into Friday. The first system will bring icy roads to parts of the North Country, including areas along I-89 and in the Adirondacks, making the Tuesday morning commute hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington, freezing rain Tuesday morning will taper off by the afternoon. However, slippery road conditions could linger throughout the day. Motorists should exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during peak freezing hours.
A second, more significant system is forecast for Thursday afternoon into Friday. The NWS reports that snow, mixed precipitation, and strong winds could make holiday travel slow and difficult across Vermont. Areas along I-89, I-91, and neighboring mountain passes may see heavy snow accumulation, with some locations potentially receiving more than three inches by Friday morning.
The week begins with milder weather. Monday is expected to be mostly sunny with highs near 42°F. Rain is likely Monday night into Tuesday morning, turning to freezing rain as temperatures drop to 33°F. Wednesday will bring another chance of rain and snow showers before clearing slightly overnight. Thanksgiving Day may see mixed rain and snow, with highs near 38°F.
Officials urge travelers to monitor forecasts closely and adjust plans as necessary. Emergency kits, including warm clothing and ice scrapers, are recommended for anyone traveling during these conditions.
