Burlington, VT – High winds and unseasonably warm temperatures are set to hit the Lake Champlain area and Vermont’s North Country on Wednesday, raising fire risks across the region. With persistent dry conditions despite recent light rainfall, officials urge residents to exercise caution outdoors. A burn ban remains in effect, and the National Weather Service warns that even minor sparks could lead to fires.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the combination of gusty winds, reaching up to 30 mph, and temperatures rising into the 60s and 70s will intensify fire risks. The temperature surge, unusual for November, could make Vermont one of the warmest spots in the Northeast midweek. Local authorities recommend postponing any open burning and avoiding actions that could generate sparks, particularly near grassy or forested areas.

Wednesday will bring a high around 71°F, with south winds between 10 to 17 mph, potentially gusting as high as 30 mph. Residents should secure loose items in their yards and prepare for strong breezes that could impact travel and outdoor plans. By Wednesday night, temperatures are expected to dip to around 46°F, with winds shifting northwest at 7 mph.

The remainder of the week will cool off slightly, with Thursday offering partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-50s. Northwest winds will range from 7 to 9 mph. The weekend forecast shows a further drop in temperatures, with a high of 49°F on Saturday, accompanied by sunny skies.

Residents in the Lake Champlain region and surrounding areas are encouraged to stay updated on fire safety guidelines and monitor local weather alerts for any changes to conditions.
