Burlington, Vermont – Scattered thunderstorms could rattle parts of Vermont this afternoon, with isolated severe storms possible between 2 and 7 p.m. Thursday. Damaging winds, lightning, and heavy rain may accompany the strongest cells, posing a threat to outdoor activities and travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Level 1 severe storm risk is in place across most of the state, including Chittenden, Washington, and Rutland counties. While the majority of storms will remain below severe levels, isolated stronger cells could produce localized hail and gusts over 50 mph.
Drivers on I-89 and I-91 should remain alert for sudden downpours and wind-blown debris, especially near Montpelier, Barre, and Middlebury. Hikers and campers in the Green Mountains are urged to seek shelter before storms develop.
The storm window opens early this afternoon and may disrupt commutes, sports events, or outdoor work. Charge devices and secure loose objects outside as a precaution.
Additional watches or warnings may be issued if storm intensity increases. Stay weather aware and monitor local alerts through the evening.
